David has been in the financial services sector since 1975. Through most of the 1980’s, he was a broker with one of Canada’s largest investment dealers and worked with both institutional and retail clients. While a broker, David traded securities and derivative contracts. In 1988, he became vice president and partner at Hodgson Roberton Laing Limited (“HRL”), Canada’s oldest investment counsel with assets under management of about $2 billion. At HRL (now part of Fiera Capital), David was a member of the investment committee and a key contact to investment and benefit consultants. He was the partner in charge of HRL’s mutual fund operation.
After leaving HRL in 1996, David continued as a financial and insurance advisor to individuals and corporations. Initially, he operated through his own dealer, which he sold in 1999 to a public company and stayed under management contract until 2001. After operating with a couple of other dealer platforms, David is now registered through Investia Financial Services Inc., a Mutual fund dealer.
David received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Toronto. David is a Past President of the Faculty of Management Alumni Association. He is past Vice President of the University of Toronto Alumni Association. Most recently, David has been involved in the mentoring programs to MBA candidates at the Rotman Business School. He is an inaugural year recipient of an Arbor Award from the University of Toronto for volunteer service. He is a Fellow of the Canadian Securities Institute.
David is active in the industry. He has participated on committees at the Investment Funds Institute of Canada (“IFIC”) and served a term as Chairman of the Advertising Standards Committee at IFIC. He has participated in a number of regulatory and industry forums. David has also served on a number of boards of both private and public corporations. He has often been interviewed on television, radio, and in the press.
David skis and scuba dives, has run several marathons, and has paddled in many dragon boat races. He has in the past been active in martial arts, particularly Wing Chun style Kung Fu and Tae Kwon Do (black belt level). He plays a mean ukulele and not a completely terrible classical/contemporary style of guitar.
David and his wife, Dorinda, live in Toronto. Dorinda is a Partner with the law firm McMaster, McIntyre, & Smyth, LLP. David has two daughters. Amelia graduated with a B.A. from University of Toronto. She is an advisor at David Miner & Associates. Victoria completed her Master’s degree in Social Work at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland and is currently a social worker in Alberta.
